Each year, the EIFF features films in a variety of categories, which are then judged both by a jury as well as the audience to culminate in the presentation of various awards. Of the broader designations of film, which include documentaries, feature-films, music videos, and shorts, there are also a series of subcategories to break the films into groupings for fairer judging. Some examples of the subcategories include "Gala" and "British Gala" films, which are new feature films from international or UK filmmakers respectively, "Mirrorball" films, which include both music documentaries and music videos, and "Under the Radar" films, which are honored for taking risks.
Submissions for the EIFF are accepted through February each year so films can be ready for the festival in June. Typically the festival is opened and closed with two of the biggest "Gala" films. Some of the famous films that have premiered at the EIFF include Little Miss Sunshine, Billy Elliot, and Ratatouille. The 2013 Edinburgh International Film Festival will be held from June 19-30.
